BIO

Tina Rae Carter is an accomplished designer painter and sculptor who develops concepts for large scale public art works and community projects. Working with councils, youth, schools, art institutions, and Mana whenua to extend the reach of art in the community, and tell stories of the land, and reference extinct, endangered, and endemic species of Aotearoa NZ

Painting: Oil on board/canvas. Egg tempura and wax, and the micro and macro of NZ endemic species in subjective, and re-imagined environments

Historical Restoration: Working with Architects and Conservators to update the relevance of Opera Houses in Aotearoa.

RNZB: Traditional practice of hand painting backcloths, and hand sculpting large props.

Most Notable Commissions-

2018-2022- ‘St James Theatre’ Wellington Earthquake Strengthening and refurbishment

Working with architects to design/ sculpt new aspects of plasterwork, and design and implement historically sensitive updates for the colour scheme and paint finishes for plasterwork in the auditorium

2015 - Selected to design integrated artworks/colour and effects for on-going ‘Wellington Opera House’ refurbishment. Including stencils, mirror etching designs, paint concept and visual aspects for refurbishments, in collaboration with architects.

This project received a Resene Total Colour Heritage Award
2004- 2006 - Selected to design and paint the ceiling of the ‘Hawke’s Bay Opera House’

A multi award winning project - extending to carpet design, and collaboration with glass artist to weave the concept throughout Auditorium. (This work was lost during earthquake strengthening from a fire and flood affecting the ceiling plaster in 2020)
